Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure

"Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure" follows the familiar High School Musical character (Ashley Tisdale) from her pampered country club life to the rough and tumble of New York and Broadway. This is her performance for her country club fundraiser.

Upon her arrival in New York Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) is thrown out of her prearranged penthouse, and is rescued by young filmmaker Peyton (Austin Butler), who takes her to a spare apartment in his rough, dirty East Village walk-up. This is the hallway we built to connect the apartment sets.

A detail of the luggage we created for Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) with custom-designed plaids and other patterns looking quite out of place in this dismal, post-war green apartment stage set.

In the story, Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) takes charge of her situation and converts her miserable studio into a frilly, pink, inside-Jeannie's-bottle dream apartment. This is the same stage set as the one pictured previously. We had only half a day and one night to make the transformation.

Another angle of the murphy bed in Sharpay's (Ashley Tisdale) transformed apartment, this time on the morning of the shoot with the proper lighting. The murphy bed was a running gag that kept swallowing her up as she slept.

The script required a moment where Peyton (Austin Butler) calls to Sharpay(Ashley Tisdale) from his neighboring apartment window. I designed a "Lightwell", an architectural detail typical of 19th century multi-story New York apartment buildings that allowed air and sunlight to service inner rooms, and thus allowed our hero's windows to be straight across from each other. This also required the entire floor of the apartment building to be on a 6-foot riser. Here is a detail of the lightwell.

After many ups and downs, Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) lands the role of a lifetime in a big Broadway show. Here is her big moment on the opening night of "A Girl's Best Friend", with a deconstructed city-scape of an idealized New York neighborhood.

Another moment in the opening number of "A Girl's Best Friend", with Broadway fantasy marquees descending above the stage. This was installed in Toronto's beautiful Elgin theater. Our schedule overlapped with theG20 summit, and the theater was well within the high-security area. So we had to design the set to load-in in a few short hours before the lockdown, and rioting occurred outside the front doors as we were assembling it. It was an exciting day.
