Minutemen is a clever Disney comedy about 3 nerdy boys who invent a time machine and use it to try to spare their fellow nerds from the daily humiliations of high school life. But, in classic time travel fashion, things don’t go as planned. This is their high school, the Summerton Rams. Our ram mascot covers a large, existing high school sign and had to be a complex steel fabrication because two of our boys find themselves hung from the ram’s horns by their underwear in their introductory humiliation. The large lettering was suspended from the roof by steel cables.
The boys find the perfect home for their time machine project, the long-forgotten and abandoned civil defense shelter under their school’s football field. This is the set we built for that.
A reverse of the abandoned fallout shelter set. As their time machine required a tremendous amount of power, we designed this hazardous-looking “electrical room” to supply it.
A detail of the blast door in the abandoned fallout shelter set. We decided that the last time anyone maintained this place was probably in 1958, during the Eisenhower administration. So we added the portraits of the president and vice president from the time. During the cleaning-up montage, the director made a great joke of one of the boys pulling cobwebs off the Nixon portrait and recoiling in horror.
The cheekily-themed “Rock Around the Clock” dance at the high school.
